For six weeks each July and August, 87 sq km of high-altitude Himalayan valley erupts into a living canvas of 500 wildflower species — the world's most extraordinary natural floral display. A UNESCO World Heritage Site accessible only on foot, this is a journey reserved for those who walk toward wonder.
A warm look at the journey ahead
The Valley of Flowers National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 — blooms in one of nature's most extraordinary annual displays between July and mid-September. At 3658 m in the Chamoli district, the valley's 87 sq km shelter over 500 species of Himalayan wildflowers including Brahma Kamal, Blue Poppy, Cobra Lily, and Himalayan Balsam. The trek begins at Govindghat (1828 m) on the Badrinath highway, ascending 13 km to Ghangaria (3050 m) — the base camp — through dense bhoj (birch) forests and the Pushpawati River gorge. A further 4 km level walk enters the valley. Hemkund Sahib — the Sikh shrine at 4329 m on the shores of Hemkund Lake — is one of the holiest Gurudwaras in India, historically mentioned in the Dasam Granth. The combined spiritual and natural experience of Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib is unique in the world.
