Harsil — a restricted border valley at 2620 m on the banks of the Bhagirathi — is Uttarakhand's most beautiful and least-visited Himalayan destination. Apple orchards cascade down to a crystal river, ancient pilgrim paths thread through deodar forests, and Gangotri — source of the sacred Ganga — lies just 26 km ahead.
A warm look at the journey ahead
Harsil Valley — at 2620 m in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand — remains one of India's most spectacularly beautiful and least-visited destinations. Located on the Bhagirathi River just 26 km below Gangotri Dham, the valley's apple orchards (Harsil's Wilson apples are legendary), dense deodar forests, and the towering Bandarpunch and Srikanth peaks create an otherworldly landscape. The Gartang Gali — an ancient wooden plank pilgrim trail carved into a sheer rock face above the Jadh Ganga river gorge — was the historic trade and pilgrim route to Tibet used for centuries before the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Mukhba village — the winter seat of Maa Gangotri — preserves authentic Bhotia culture with traditional wooden architecture. Gangotri Temple — one of the four sacred Char Dhams — is the revered source of the Holy Ganga. Indian nationals only; inner line permit required.
